What Does ‘The Fox’ Say? THANKS!
Those of us who call Atlanta home feel particularly privileged to spend an evening out at The Fox Theatre. It’s THE place for incredible live entertainment and events. It’s an Atlanta landmark and everyone who has called the ATL home at some point probably has a story about the time they once went to ‘The Fox.’
I particularly enjoy watching the Broadway Across America shows that take place there, where I can bring my family for performances that we’d otherwise catch on Broadway. Sitting in the historic theatre, soaking up all the talent…there’s just nothing like it (at least not for this small town gal who didn’t have such options growing up hours from these kinds of performances).
But I also adore The Fox because it’s the venue where I’ve hosted the Atlanta Baby and Child Expo for the past five years. I know all the back hall ways, each nook and cranny of the Grand Ballroom, the Egyptian Ballroom and the balcony overlooking it, and even the outdoor patio that most people don’t even know exists.
The Fox makes the guests of my event feel fabulous, and I couldn’t imagine hosting the expo anywhere else in Atlanta without losing the intimate, extravagant feel.
So, it’s really hard for me to believe we almost lost The Fox 40 years ago.
Southern Bell bought the property and planned to tear it down so that it could build its headquarters in its place.
Luckily, Atlanta residents launched a city-wide effort to save it, refurbish it and bring it back to its original glory.
To say they succeeded is an understatement.
Now, all this year, The Fox will be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the ‘Save the Fox’ campaign.
A special gala celebration on March 14, 2015 will honor the efforts of the original Atlanta Landmarks, Inc. board. Board members will be recognized during the event.
And on June 7, 2015, the 40th Anniversary celebration will culminate with a Fox Theatre block party to provide Atlanta the opportunity to experience the magic of the theatre through concerts, special tours, activities, and prize drawings. The event will be free and open to the public.
(In between those events, on May 2nd, I’ll be hosting my annual Atlanta Baby and Child Expo again, so you’re welcome to come check it out then, too.)
If you’d like to show your support for The Fox now, the“Friends of the Fox” membership program is underway again. Benefits range from advance notice of show announcements and special ticket offers to Coca-Cola Film Festival tickets, backstage tours, and exclusive members-only access and events. “Friends of the Fox” members will also receive an invitation to the gala celebration.
And if you’re a fan of The Fox, like I am, you can enter a contest on Facebook as they search for the Fox Theatre’s Biggest Fan. Submissions are accepted for 40 days (Sep. 23, 2014 – Nov. 1, 2014). Go to fb.com/foxtheatreinstitute or fb.com/thefoxtheatreatlanta to enter.
In addition, the 2015 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival will have a day-long showing of 40th anniversary movies with throwback pricing.
