’46 Mommas’ and Their Fight Against Childhood Cancer
As a mother, when my child hurts, I hurt with them, and would gladly suffer any disease or illness in their place. But, life doesn’t work that way. Sometimes, we can only sit by and watch as those we love fight for their life. Well, 46 women who are or have been in that position, watching their children fight cancer, are taking a stand this month. On September 21 at Union Station in Washington DC, nearly four dozen mothers from around the country will gather to shave their heads in solidarity with their children…children who have fought or are currently fighting cancer. It’s all part of a drive to raise funds to find a cure and build awareness.
These 46 women call themselves the “46 Mommas.” Why 46? Because each weekday, that’s the number of families that are told that their child has cancer. The Mommas come from all over the country, including here in Atlanta. They held a similar event last year in LA. You can click here to see the video.
They picked now because September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (proclaimed in 2010 by President Obama). It is the perfect time for the 46 Mommas to join together with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation in supporting the Foundation’s mission to “Conquer Kids’ Cancer!” The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers. If you’d like to contribute to the cause, there are links on both the 46 Mommas site and St. Baldrick’s.
