A Different Kind of House Call, 2nd.MD Review
Thank you to 2nd.MD for providing me with a $200 stipend to test-drive this revolutionary online medical service.
One of the worst parts about going to the doctor is the actual “going” part, getting there, sitting in an office waiting, sitting longer in an exam room, well, you get my point. So what if you could see the doctor without actually going anywhere?
2nd.MD is set up to make that possible. That’s because when you “see” the doctor, you’re actually seeing him (or her) over the Internet. It’s a virtual doctor visit, but an appointment all the same. You set up an appointment online, then, when the scheduled time arrives, you just log on with your webcam and hold your appointment online. The doctor has a webcam on his end and is able to ask you questions, which you then answer, just like you’re having a conversation in the office.
When asked to review the service, I set up an appointment with a rheumatologist. I had some questions about an auto-immune disease I was diagnosed with several years ago. At the time, I felt the risks for the medication outweighed the pain I was enduring. I wanted to know if that was still the best move in my case, or if research had found some new way to help me. I hadn’t seen my rheumatologist in years and liked the idea of talking to someone else in the field in the meantime.
The technology took a little getting-used to (definitely try it out before you set up an appointment), but I have to say it was really handy to be able to talk to an expert from my own living room. The q and a on both ends was thorough and after the appointment I was even emailed some special notes about what we discussed.
The doctors you’ll find on the site are impressive. Each session is built into 20 minute increments and you’ll pay about $200 for that session. If you need a prescription or an official diagnosis you can’t get it, but if you don’t have insurance or time to physically go see a doc and want some reassurance on your condition, this can be really convenient. Here’s a little more information on the company.
