Happy Birthday to My 18 Yr Old Son

Eighteen years ago I had no idea what I was in for when my blue-eyed baby finally made his debut into my life. Arriving a few days later than expected, I should have known he’d be calling the shots the rest of his life.  Sure, I could guide him along, and make all kinds of suggestions for how to live his life, but ultimately, this strong-willed kiddo was going to make his own choices.

I know a little bit of me rubbed off on him.  He, like me, will fight for the underdog, having little patience for others being picked on or made to feel like an outsider.  He’s loyal.  He’s funny.  He’s smart.

He’s picked up some of my bad traits, too.  Mainly, he’s stubborn.

And now, he’s a man.  My sweet baby boy.  A man. Heading off in 12 days to college.  The thought breaks my heart, while also making it swell with pride.  I know he’s off to do amazing things…to be a great person.

So, Payne-a-boo, happy birthday, sweet boy man! You are loved, my son.  And you will always be my baby. Please always remember the words from the book I read you countless times when you were tiny, “I’ll Love You Forever”.
