An Inside Look at the US Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Facility
It’s not often you can get an inside view at how an automobile is made, so when I was invited to tour the Tuscaloosa, Alabama, plant where Mercedes-Benz creates its ML-Class, R-Class, and GL-Class vehicles, I jumped on the opportunity.
And now, the facility is in the midst of a 2.4 million dollar expansion to prepare for the new C-Class, which will also be made there.
And in 2015, another vehicle will be produced out of this same plant.
Walking through the facility is an eye-opening experience and I was given a rare opportunity to get video and pictures while taking the tour. It felt a little like watching Monsters, Inc, the movie where doors are manufactured, but in this case, it was car parts moving through the air, across assembly lines, being put together by robotic machines and overseen by thousands of hard workers.
Enjoy the video I put together of the tour here.
And if you ever make it to Tuscaloosa, stop by for a tour of your own.

When we lived in Alabama, I tried several times to take a tour at the Mercedes plant and there was always some type of conflict. How cool that you were able to go! Do you by any chance get to drive one of those brand new Mercedes?

Yes, actually, I did…they sent me a GL-350 to drive over from Atlanta to Tuscaloosa for the annual StarTech event for Mercedes-Benz owners all over the country. I pass this plant every time I go see my son at the Univ of Alabama and always made a point to email pics to the pr folks as I passed by. 🙂
