Being pregnant is a breeze for some people, but when I was carrying my babies, my body ached like nothing else I can explain, and a pregnancy massage would have been magical.
I didn’t know there were people who specialized in this when I was having children. Boy, I sure wish I did, though.
It’s important that people who are ‘expecting’ don’t go to just any massage therapist, though.
You really need to ask if the therapist is Certified in pregnancy massage. That means they took additional training on pregnancy massage above the regular required training needed for their massage therapy license.
There’s a gal in Atlanta who I’ve worked with for several years now who has this special training. She’s Tara Thompson, founder of North Atlanta Pregnancy Massage & Wellness and she’s not just a great massage therapist, she’s a fabulous person. That stuff matters to me.
She takes the time to talk with clients before the appointment. She asks questions regarding the pregnancy to make sure it is ok for you to get a massage and find out how you need your massage to be personalized (which part aches most, etc).
Tara is also good about giving you some tips to do at home to help you in between your appointments. This could be anything from stretches, sleeping tips, nutrition or something else that will help a mom everyday. You may not be able to afford a prenatal massage every day (don’t you wish?!), but during pregnancy your body grows at such a pace that you could use one. Take advantage of any tips you’re given.
