Stone Mountain Park’s Snow Mountain Offers Chilly Fun
Being in Atlanta, it’s not often we get our fill of flurries, but Stone Mountain Park’s Snow Mountain provides a good substitute for the snow.
During the summer, climbing up Stone Mountain is all kinds of fun, but in the winter months, my family loves spending a couple hours tubing down the hills of artificially created snow.
We’ve figured out that if we get there early–for the first two-hour block of time of the day–then we will get a lot more fun packed into the trip. On our last trip, we broke the record for the most times tubing in one block of time (14 if you want to know–and we started 20 minutes late because of some traffic backups on our way there). That’s a really big deal when you compare it to our trip the year before, when we only got three trips down the hill in the entire two hours. That’s because we went later in the day, when it’s a whole lot more crowded. So, if you want to get your money’s worth, show up early.
Another tip: bring a change of clothes. I knew the kids would get all wet playing in the Snow Zone, but I figured I’d stay dry enough. Wrong. Just sitting down in the tubes you’re likely to get your back side wet. Definitely put on an extra layer of something that is water repellant. And bring extra shoes. You can rent a locker to keep all of your extra things in while you play in the snow.
Beyond that, just have fun! Book the tickets early because they sell out and can only accommodate a certain number of people in each time slot. The day we went there was a slight drizzle for a bit. We didn’t mind…in fact, it worked to our benefit because I think it kept some other people home. Again, that just meant more fun for us.
If you have a large family, it can be expensive. Definitely take advantage of the package deals that are offered online.
